Being Peloponnese’s largest city and one of the country’s most significant ports, Patras is without doubt the capital of the carnival and fun. It was Patras that made the small yet miraculous Corinthian black raisin famous in all of Europe. The city’s roman past can be documented by the preserved buildings, namely the Roman Odeum, the second largest in Greece after Herodes Atticus in Athens. The entrance to the Balkans’ largest byzantine church of Saint Andrew introduces the visitor to the ambience of Christian religion. The city offers a choice of museums, such as the new Archaeological Museum, and the Museum of History and Ethnology among others. Visit the Medieval Castle and the Castle of Moreas or admire the unique architecture of the Apollon Theater as well as the large and historical squares. Before leaving, don’t miss Achaia Clauss, the country’s oldest winery, to taste the sweet dark.
Take the small yet enchanting Odontotos train and enjoy one of Europe’s most fascinating journeys. Admire the amazing landscapes as they change along the journey to the Vouraikos gorge. Visit Greece’s oldest monastery suspended from a colossal rock, Mega Spilaio, and its rare religious treasures. At the end of the journey, ride a little further on and walk in the footsteps of Paleolithic civilizations in the breathtaking Cave of the Lakes.
Vouraikos gorge starts at a distance of 3 km from the west foothills of mount Helmos and mount Panachaiko, and leads all the way to Diakopto. Vouraikos River springs from the mountains of Kalavryta and ends at the Corinthian gulf, near the beach of Diakopto. Along its way it has created a deep, unique gorge. As it runs down to the sea, it receives the waters of several streams forming small lakes and numerous cascades. Its width is constantly changing. The narrowest spot, “Portes”, is located close to Zachlorou. According to the myth, there was a rock there, blocking Hercules passage. Hercules cut the rock in two and created this gateway. The rack railway passes through the gorge.
